Top 10 Tear Jerker Flicks

Alright, so one thing you may or may not have gathered from my posts is that I'm VERY emotional. No shit, right? Yes, I am. However, my hyper-emotional states were usually confined to the privacy of my room, wailing into my pillow, except during movies; the soppy ones can sure get me going. My husband enjoys laughing at me and is constantly amazed at just how 'into it' I really get. I'm talking full out snotty weeping.

"You know it's not real, right?" Yeah, thanks for that insight, dickhead. He is afraid to see the final Harry Potter with me this summer because of the spectacle I will probably surely be making of myself.

Me: "But I thought you enjoy watching me become a blubbering idiot!"
Hubs: "Yes! In the privacy of our own home; not in public."
Me: "Too bad, it's going to be messy; I can tell you that right now."

On that note, here are the Top 10 movies that I could barely see through the continuous stream of tears that were pelting down my face. The volume usually has to be cranked in order to hear over my sobs and sniffles!

10. Edward Scissorhands - I love Johnny Depp in this movie so much. The last 20 minutes are tears of anger and apathy all rolled into one giant snotty wad of tissues.

9. Moulin Rouge! - Ewan McGregor singing: "I will love you until my dying day." 'Nuf said.

{Disney}
8. Little Mermaid - She NEVER gets to see her father ever again! That prince better give her the best damn head EVER, now that she permanently went and got herself a vagina.

7. The Color Purple - I'm not sure which part gets me the most, the sad tears when her sister leaves or happy ones when she gets to finally meet her children; it's too close to call.

6. Beaches - The love of their friendship is amazing and heart-breaking; Bette Midler is perfection in this movie, but I know that's not exactly a groundbreaking observation.

5. Ghost - I'm sure it's in most people's top 5, but how can it not? "The love inside - you take it with you." Ah guh!

4. Big Fish - This reminds me of my grandfather so much that I think they stole his stories; he was an amazing story teller and it's really hard for me to watch the end of this movie, regardless of how great they filmed it.

3. Fine Things (Danielle Steel) - This might not be a popular one, but if you've seen or read it, you will know! It's a pure roller coaster of emotions. My mother and I went through almost an entire box of kleenex during this made-for-TV movie.

2. P.S. I Love You - I'm sure the writers sat around and thought: How can we make a movie where people (women) will cry not just at the end, but every 10 minutes for the entire duration? We know! Let's have her read a whole bunch of letters from her dead husband spaced throughout the whole movie. The bastards got me - hook, line and sinker.

1. Field of Dreams - He gets to play catch with the ghost of his dead father; are you fucking kidding me? I'm crying just thinking about it. All my hubby has to do is yell out "FIELD OF DREAMS" and my eyes fill up faster than a freshman's beer funnel on a Friday night; he thinks it's hilarious. Damn dead daddy issues... they get me every time.

  1. Oh, Fine Things...
    My father figure daddy issues all come together in this movie. I want him to sit me on his lap and tell me that he's proud that I'm his daughter while he reaches up my skirt. Sigh.

  2. PS I love you!!!! The movie is a real tear jerker but if you read the book i swear you will be sobbing like a baby screams and all!:{ It's better than the movie though:)

  3. Aw! P.S.: I Love You gets me every time.

    Every. Time.

    But my ultimate snotty tear movie is "What Dreams May Come." He goes to Hell for her soul! WHAT? Game over, man.

  4. Big Fish, TOTALLY. Beaches too. But I don't get why so many people thought that PS I Love You was such a tearjerker. Was it sad that he died? Yes. They would have gotten me for sure had they shown his suffering or his death, but to just cut to the funeral? Meh. Plus, I just didn't think the movie was all that good, except for Jeffrey Dean Morgan. But I am a bit of a movie snob, so there you go.

    But I DID cry at Toy Story 3. That shizz was sad!

  5. Oh My - I guess I joined the club then too - the Colour Purple, I can't count how many times I have watched this film but every time without fail. Beaches from the first time I saw it to every other time I just bawl like a baby, P.S. I love you I've never seen it the whole way through I can't get past the bit where she hears his voice on the answer phone, tried but it's not happening for me.

    I have two favourite all time: What Dreams May Come - Robin Williams, Cuba Gooding Jr, Annabella Sciorra and Who will love my children - I can't even think about that one without crying

    Great choices oxox

  6. Actually in the Little Mermaid 2 she goes back to the sea and does get to see her daddy. I haven't seen any of those other movies, well except Edward Scissor Hands.

  7. @Abby
    There were parts in that movie that got me too - but for some reason, it didn't make the cut for me. I'd have to see it again.

    @TwinSpin
    I think I really submerge myself into the role - I don't think I could handle it if I kept getting letters from my dead hubby. Maybe because I know what my mom went through when my dad died, I identify with her. Otherwise, I actually can't stand Hilary Swank! Go figure.

  8. The Notebook and My Sisters Keeper always make me bawl.

    I haven't seen Like Dandelion Dust yet, but the bookmade me cry, so I bet the movie does, too.

  9. @Just Jen
    I still have to see those!!

    I even lose it at Forever Young w/ Mel Gibson and there's an old 80s Disney movie "Time Flyer" with Peter Coyote that is just ridiculous. WAAAAAA. LOL.

  10. Steel Magnolias dude....The graveyard scene with Sally Fields turns me into a blubbering idiot every time.
    And of course Titanic - even though I've seen it a hundred million times, when Jack dies I cried like a baby.

  11. The colour purple one of my fave books!

  12. @karen
    THAT scene is truly amazing; probably would be in my Top 10 "Scenes" but I couldn't put Magnolias on my Top 10 for this one because of 1 main reason - fucking Julia Roberts in that movie annoyed the hell outta me. "Ma culas are blush n' bashful'. Gag. I didn't even cry when she died.

  15. Oh goodness, so many of these make bawl too!!! Especially Edward Scissorhands, P.S. I love you, and Big Fish. A few of the others are: Armageddon, What Dreams May Come, The Notebook, Benny and Joon, and A Walk to Remember.

  16. crying and laughing through a movie is soooo fun....I hope you have seen Fried Green Tomatoes. That one gets me EVERY single time.

  17. @Miss Allie
    I tried SO hard not to cry in Armageddon, SO HARD. I was crying AND rolling my eyes at the same time. DAMMIT.

    @Finding One's Way (Jessica)
    Funny you put it like that. Yes, my ass has been known to also produce tears, and not in an envious way.

    @Heidi Ho
    There are a couple Mary-Louise Parker movies that have tugged a heart string or two.

    If I had the attention span to do a Top 100, I SO could fill it will all the movies that have made me cry, but who would even want to read that many? LOL.

  18. City of Angels with Meg Ryan and Nick Cage. Gets me every time.

  19. Oh I'm a crier, full on can't breathe sobbing mess. It doesn't take much to make me cry. I'm a super emotional person. Yeah and those ASPCA commercials...they get me every time.

  20. Want to know a secret? I don't cry in sad movies. I know, I know! I'm all emotional, but the tears just don't come. The weird part? I cry in happy movies! At the end of Love Actually when the little boy who's mom dies runs after the girl in the airport, then he gives his step dad a hug and calls him 'dad'? I'm a blubbering mess. Any movie where you wait for the leading characters to get together and in the end they finally do I'm an emotional basket case.

  21. Oh man....PS I Love You made me cry like a baby...Watch What Dreams May Come with Robin Williams...you'll be wrecked.

  22. Do you know how many movies made me cry BEFORE kids? None. You know how many movies make me cry now? EVERY. MOVIE. I. WATCH. Seriously, I've turned into a sobbing mess. Just yesterday, I bawled my eyes out over the end of Terminator. TERMINATOR.
    Damn kids, they did this to me.

  23. @AMo
    Terminator? Hahaa... The only reason I would cry through that movie would be because it was so bad. LOL

  24. haha yup Beaches and Ghost are definitely tear jerkers for me. :P

  25. HYPERVENTILATED during Beaches and My Girl when Thomas J. dies of bees stings. (Don't tell anyone, but my husband got choked up when he saw Bieber's movie at the parts he helps deserving fans. I don't think my 10 year old daughter cried. Yeah, he can be a big wuss.)

  26. @mom-mom-mom
    Oooo - My Girl - that's a good one too. When Vada goes in with his glasses? OMG - yeah, that was too much. I lost it too.

  27. Haha!!!
    Little Mermaid is on high rotation at my house. You'll be glad to know that I also have the sequel...and she does in fact see her father again. And yes, her hubby'd want to have a penis the size of a whale to compensate.
    Nemo is the one that always gets me going, right at the onset.
    Why does the mother in these movies always have to bloody die?....actually I researched this once and it's because Walt Disney's mother died and he never got over it. Deep stuff for just kids movies don't you think?

  28. I've never ever seen Ghost. Am I a loser?

    ReplyDelete
  29. OK. After this post I AM CONVINCED that we are the same person!

  30. For tearjerkers, I love My Life (Michael Keaton and Nicole Kidman), Phenomenon (John Travolta and Kyra Sedgwick), and One True Thing (Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger) in additon to some of yours. I had some others in my head, too, but I have lost them... Oh well.

  31. Nothing ever made me as emotional as the movie Titanic did. I have been obsessed with the Titanic story ever since my childhood so when they made a movie out of it - it brought it all to life for me. I began sobbing when the iceberg was sited - then didn't stop until long after the credits had finished. I mean - I friggin' BALLED. I couldn't even see the damn movie for all my tears. And it just kept getting worse - when the band was playing as the ship sunk, when Rose and Jack were clinging to the rails, watching people fall... It was all made real to me. Horrible... but I loved it.

  32. @Belle
    I'm sure if there wasn't so much damn water flowing through the last 1/2 hour, I'd ball too - but I have an sympathetic bladder and all that movie does is make me have to pee. LOL

    I DO get goosebumps when she throws the necklace back into the ocean though, every time.

    @Anonymous
    I totally cried at Phenomenon.

  33. "Fried Green Tomatoes" is in my top 10.
